Available to girls and boys from kindergarten through fifth grade (or 5 to 10 years of age) and their families, Cub Scouting is fun for the whole family and helps children grow into their very best selves. Children participate in a huge array of activities, including games, projects, skits, stunts, songs, outdoor activities, trips, and service projects. Besides being fun, these activities offer opportunities for growth, achievement, and family involvement. It’s fun, hands-on learning and achievement that puts kids in the middle of the action and prepares them for today – and for life.
Please read the below information and if you still have questions, please come to one of our sign-up nights and we can answer all questions then. We will be updating this page as Info Nights are added. We typically hold an info night at Folsom Hills, Epmire Oaks, Oak Chan, and Russell Ranch Elementary Schools.

Please register online first with Scouts BSA. When you do this, you will pay the National Scouts BSA and Golden Empire District registration fees.
Please also fill out our Parent Volunteer Form. Parents or guardians of Scouts are required to volunteer with the Pack. This form lets us know how your specific strengths might be utilized to help achieve the goals of Scouting and Pack 1855.
Print and fill out parts A and B of the BSA Medical Form. Attach your child's vaccination record rather than filling out that section.
Finally, you will be contacted by our Treasurer to pay your Pack 1855 registration fee. The fee includes your child's handbook, neckerchief, slide, 1855 patch for Tigers and older, and a Pack t-shirt ("Class B"/activity uniform). Scouts can participate in fundraisers to cover their registration fees, as outlined in our FAQs below.
Once you complete these steps (especially BSA registration and Pack dues and registration), we'll get you your gear, get you set up on Scoutbook, and assign you to a Den.
Currently, the Pack Dues are $180 per year, and the National/Council Dues are about $165 per year, for a total of $345 per year. However, after their first year, many Scouts participate in our Fall popcorn sales fundraiser, and most Scouts choose to sell popcorn to cover their costs, but this is optional. Selling popcorn is only avaialbe to returning Scouts. But all costs - BSA and Pack dues, uniform, and activity costs - can be reimbursed through fundraising. So the initial cost can be the only cost incurred for normal Scouting operations over the course of a Scout's journey. Plus, selling popcorn is a great experience!
The Cub Scout uniform consists of an official field uniform ("Class A") shirt, hat (optional), neckerchief (K-4th Grade), and belt. You may wear your own pants, shorts/skorts, and socks, or purchase them from the River City Scout Shop. Scouts in 4th grade or below wear a blue uniform shirt; starting in 5th grade, Scouts wear a tan uniform shirt. When you register with Pack 1855, your Pack registration fees will cover the purchase of your Pack T-shirt (your "Class B" activity t-shirt used for service projects and other informal settings). You will receive your neckerchief, slide and required grade-level handbook from the Pack. All other items can be found at the River City Scout Shop or at scoutshop.org. If you buy your blue or tan uniform shirt at River City Scout Shop, you can often purchase "pre-sewn" shirts that have the council patch on the shoulder already, which saves a little work.
A den is a smaller group within the Pack based on grade/age and gender. Scouts and their parents work together to coordinate meetings and activities to meet the Cub Scout program requirements. These requirements are called "adventures." Together, scouts complete adventures and move to the next “rank” (grade level) in the scouting program.
Cub Scout Dens are the key unit of scouting and consist of a group of up to six to eight children. In their Dens, Cub Scouts develop new skills and interests. They practice sportsmanship and good citizenship, and they learn to do their best, not just for themselves but for the Den as well. Each Den is part of Pack 1855, which encompasses all of the Dens of girls and boys from Kindergarten to 5th grade. Within Pack 1855, scouts have the opportunity to participate in additional Pack events and activities that further the child’s learning and achievement. Dens meet 1-2 times per month outside of Pack Meetings on a date determined by the Den leader.
The Pack is made up of all the grade-level Dens. The Pack organizes fun and engaging activities and community service projects as well as achievement recognition ceremonies and events for scouts and their families. Some Pack 1855 activities include the Raingutter Regatta, Pinewood Derby, summer water balloon toss, camping and indoor campfires. Pack Meetings are held monthly on either Thursdays or Sundays depending on the activity.
Cub Scouts are organized into grade-level ranks, denoted by an animal or a symbol, as follows: Kindergarten Lions, 1st grade Tigers, 2nd grade Wolves, 3rd grade Bears, 4th grade Webelos and 5th grade Arrow of Light. When scouts complete their required activities for each rank, they earn a patch and can advance to the next rank. These required activities are called “Adventures” and are found in the handbook. Most Adventures will be completed at Den meetings or at Pack events, but some will be completed as a family at home. As your scout completes each Adventure, Den Leaders or parents sign off on the requirements. Once your scout completes all required activities for a specified Adventure, they will earn the corresponding Adventure belt loop or pin.
