The Silver Hatchet Award began on a cold night in 2017, when Pack 1855 gathered together for a campout. They found themselves in the wild in need of wood for a campfire. With no firewood readily available, the Scouts scoured the area to find a suitable stump. They were unable to find a suitable stump, but luckily a few parents brought a large oak log. The only tool they had was a small silver hatchet. Any sane person would decide this wasn't a good idea, but Greg Baughman and Jim McCue knew a night without S'mores would result in anarchy, so they began to chop away.
Of course, there were obstacles along the way such as the hatchet breaking and getting stuck in the log. But they never gave up and everyone had a warm campfire and delicious S'mores that night. The Silver Hatchet Award was created in honor of these two Leaders that never gave up and helped Pack 1855 continue to thrive.
When we were unexpectedly left without a Popcorn Kernal right at the start of our biggest fundraiser of the year, the Pack was in a bit of a panic. Angie flew in like a superhero to organize our fundraiser. She quickly organized shift sales, ordering popcorn inventory, and helped lead us to an outstanding fundraising year.
David was the first repeat winner of the Silver Hatchet award for his tireless commitment to Pack 1855. David continued to take on multiple responsibilities within our pack. He worked tirelessly behind the scenes with our district and council to keep us organized while always filling in to help when needed. He demonstrated a level of patience and understanding with the different ideas and opinions of our adult leaders, while keeping us on track…a true testament of perseverance.
Melinda was awarded the Silver Hatchet in 2021 because she couldn't say 'No.' The Pack had many vacant volunteer positions, namely Treasurer. Melinda volunteered to take this position On top of that, she also was a Den Leader to 2 dens, helped organize events, and the Outdoor Camping Coordinator. She has taken on many roles and juggled many responsibilities, demonstrating unwavering dedication to keeping our program running.
2020 was full of challenges with the pandemic and Pack 1855 faced a lot as well. As the Scouting season was gearing up, the Committee Chair position suddenly became vacant. This position oversees the Committee (which is made up of all our volunteer den leaders and parents) and helps the pack provide a quality program. Without a Committee Chair, Pack 1855 would not be able to continue. With only 1 year experience of being an Assistant Den Leader and fairly new to the program, David Haughton stepped up to take on this role. He led the Pack during a very uncertain time with COVID and helped the program continue to thrive. He guided the Pack during an unprecedented time and helped everyone have a quality Scouting program.
Heather was awarded the Silver Hatchet for her never ending work during Popcorn Fundraising. Heather was the Popcorn Kernel and had many challenges to overcome. One major hurdle was the Trails End sales app that tracks all Scouts' sales wouldn't work properly. She tirelessly tracked everything manually to ensure all Scouts were credited for their hard work. Heather frequently worked with Golden Empire Council to ensure everything was properly documented. Heather was our Popcorn hero!
Mark was awarded the Silver Hatchet due to his battle with an industrial mixer at a graduation campout. Mark had plans to cook up a pancake breakfast for all the campers. He started making the batter by using the large mixer in the kitchen. The controls were a bit challenging to use and when Mark tried to turn the mixer off, it went out of control launching pancake mix across the room and walls...and all over him. Mark didn't give up. He cleaned up the mess and went on to make some amazingly delicious pancakes for the campers.
